A hydraulic counterbalance valve is an important component used in a hydraulic system to control load holding, fine flow control, protection against overspeed load drop or hose rupture protection of an actuator (such as a hydraulic cylinder or hydraulic motor).
It combines the functions of a reverse free-flow check valve and a pilot-operated relief valve to control the rate of descent of a hydraulic cylinder and stabilize the load by regulating a combination of pilot pressure and load pressure.

Application
Luffing and telescoping control of aerial work platforms: Counterbalance valves are used to maintain the stability of aerial work platforms, preventing instability or unintended movement due to load changes. For example, when the platform performs luffing or telescoping operation, the counterbalance valve can ensure the smooth movement of the load and prevent the cylinder from slightly extending due to the change of pressure in the C2 chamber of the cylinder.
Traveling mechanism control: In construction machinery, counterbalance valves are used to control the traveling mechanism to maintain a stable position of the machine on a slope. As the traveling mechanism usually faces friction loads, the counterbalance valve plays a hydraulic throttling function here, and additional brakes are required to maintain the load.
