Counterbalance valves are hydraulic control devices that operate on a fundamental principle:

Free Flow Direction: Fluid can freely pass through a check valve to extend the actuator.

Controlled Return Flow: Reverse flow is blocked by a relief valve until a preset pressure (adjusted based on system pressure and load capacity) is reached. This pressure exceeds the system pressure under load, allowing fluid to flow backward and the actuator to retract. When pressure drops below the set value, the valve closes, locking the load in position.

Load Movement Control

Lifting: The check valve permits free flow, enabling cylinder extension.

Lowering: Pressure at the cylinder’s rod end pilots the valve open, allowing controlled descent. If the load accelerates ("runs away"), the valve dynamically reduces pressure to match the cylinder speed to pump flow, ensuring stability.
